Flint Hills

North America's Largest Intact Tallgrass Prairie

Gentle, rolling terrain found within Kansas Flint Hills where you'll find the last remaining vestige of the Great Plains of America.
Manhattan KS is right on the doorstep as the northern gateway to the limestone-speckled, flowing Flint Hills.

“I am not so sure but the prairies and plains, while less stunning at first sight, last longer, fill the aesthetic sense fuller, precede all the rest, and make North America's characteristic landscape."

-- Walt Whitman, 19th century American poet
Flint Hills

Regional perspective

Activities are plentiful in the Kansas Flint Hills. This is where you'll find the last remaining vestige of the Great Plains of the Midwest that exists on the North American continent. Just 4 percent of what was a once-vast tallgrass prairie remains. Flint Hills Discovery Center is a great place to start your visitor's expedition and learn about the ecosystem's evolution from seabed to grazing land.
