  1. Voices: Art Linking Asia and the West

    One section of the Seaton Gallery will highlight the back-and-forth exchange of aesthetics and ideas between East and West through objects in the museum’s permanent collection, made by artists who traveled between the two regions. This project collaboration between curator Aileen June Wang and University of Kansas art history professors Sherry Fowler and Maki Kaneko.

  2. Jeremiah Ariaz: Louisiana Trail Riders

    2019 Friends of the Beach Museum of Art Gift Print Artist introduces Jeremiah Ariaz. Black Trail Riding Clubs have their roots in Creole culture formed in Southwest Louisiana in the eighteenth century. Trail rides are an opportunity for generations from rural parts of the state to gather and celebrate. These trail riders form a distinctive yet little known Louisiana subculture.

    Ariaz is a Great Bend product and associate professor of art at Louisiana State University who has captured these equestrian clubs in a series of photographs selected for this exhibition. One image chosen as 2019 Friends of Beach Museum of Art Gift Print.

  3. De Gaulle/Eisenhower: Alliance & Friendship in War and Peace

    General de Gaulle and General Eisenhower both belong to the common national heritage of their respective countries. Their work is a source of reflection and inspiration for today’s world. The Charles de Gaulle Foundation and the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum, in partnership with the Eisenhower Foundation, strive to promote and honor the legacies of the great leaders. Together these institutions collaborated with the Musée de l’Armée (French Army Museum) to present this exhibition. With the generous support of The First Alliance Foundation, the exhibition will contribute to strengthen the bonds between France and the United States.

  4. John Steuart Curry: The Cowboy Within

    Best known for his depictions of Kansas, the American West also reveals itself as a significant subject in John Steuart Curry's work. Curry's earliest drawings reveal a boy under the spell of Western artists, e.g., Frederic Remington. Through 38 works, to include paintings and magazine illustrations, this exhibition explores Curry’s depictions of the West as a romantic and real environment.

  5. Field Station 4: Charles Lindsay

    An installation by expedition geologist and artist Charles Lindsay, who directs the artist-in-residence program for SETI (Search For Extra Terrestrial Intelligence). The installation will delve into earth's geological and cultural pasts, using scientific equipment salvaged from space exploration archaeology. Specimens and artifacts in Field Station 4 provoke musings on human perceptions of time and space.

  6. Open Trail Day at Prairiewood

    Prairiewood Retreat & Preserve is a privately owned prairie preserve with almost 500 acres and several miles of walking trails. Bring family or friends and head out on the first Sunday of each month for free access to their trails and a visit to the Blue Sage Gallery! Join us for a campfire in the evening, weather permitting. Visitors should check in at the Blue Sage Gallery at 1484 Wildcat Creek Rd. for hiker log, trail maps and other info.
    Prairiewood Retreat & Preserve loves pets, but unfortunately cannot allow them on Prairiewood trails.

  8. Vanessa Lacy Artist Talk at Prairiewood

    Vanessa Lacy is a Kansas City-based painter and owner of the Vanessa Lacy Gallery, located in the Livestock Exchange Building. Her plein air and studio paintings can be seen in KU Med’s permanent collection and at the Westport Art Fair, among other venues, and her work is part of numerous private collections across the country.
    Typically a painter of urban landscapes, Vanessa created the works on display at Blue Sage Gallery while completing an artist in residence program at Waubonsie State Park in Iowa.
    Join us for a reception on Sunday, December 1 from 3-5pm, with artist talk at 4pm.
    Or, come out starting at 1pm for our Open Trail Days at Prairiewood. Campfire just outside, weather permitting.

  10. Santa's Luminary Trail at Sunset Zoo

    Join Sunset Zoo for a hometown holiday celebration! The event will feature a luminary walk, around a portion of our trails of Sunset Zoo. Come visit with Santa, participate in arts and crafts activities for the entire family, cookie decorating, storytelling, music, live animal encounters and more!
    We will have events both inside and outside Sunset Zoo. Hands-on activities will be inside our Nature Exploration Center and we will also have our Luminary Trail along portions of the Zoo.
    Each family will receive a copy of the book The Mitten by Jan Brett while supplies last.
    Friends of Sunset Zoo will be admitted to the event early each evening beginning at 4:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. and general public admission will begin at 5:30 - 8 p.m. on both Saturday, November 30 and Sunday, December 1.

  1. Teen Literary Zone: Spring Issue Deadline

    November 19, 2019 - January 10, 2020

    Teens 7th-12th Grade: Do you want to have your writing or artwork published in a short zine? We're starting a literary art zine! For our first year, each issue will have a seasonal theme. We'll accept any form of writing or art, including things like: poems, essays, comics, photography, scans of 2-d art, or photos of 30D art, or anything outside the box that you can create. The deadline to submit work for the spring issue is January 10, 2020. Submit digital files by emailing them to ya@mhklibrary.org.
