Manhattan Kansas is a town that loves purple! Dedicated fans of the Kansas State Wildcats often say they bleed purple... and when visiting the home of the college they can live, breathe and eat purple too. If you are in the mood for a taste of the K-State spirit, here are 5 purple foods you can find in Manhattan.
1. Start off the morning by chowing down on a purple pastry at Varsity Donuts. For maximum purple goodness we recommend the Blueberry Opal, a blueberry cake donut dipped in blueberry frosting. If you are in the market for something less fruity but just as spirited, try a “K-Stater” - A Raised yeast donut dipped purple vanilla frosting & showered with purple sprinkles.
2. If there is one thing on this list you HAVE to try, it is the famous raspberry chipotle black bean dip found at the sister restaurants, So Long Saloon and Taco Lucha. This dip may sound a little wacky – black beans, cream cheese and raspberry chipotle sauce, but it is out of this world delicious. A Townie Tip: Make your drink order a Nancy, a beer with a splash of pineapple juice, to enjoy along side it and thank me later.
3. The next purple treat is a game day exclusive and game days in Manhattan are second-to-none. With an unmatched tailgating atmosphere where all are welcome, no matter your team colors. Wildcat fans pack the stadium with purple, 50,000 strong many of them sporting purple tongues from a warm bag of salty and sweet purple kettle corn. A staple concession for decades now among K-State fans.
4. The next violet delicacy can be located on the campus of Kansas State University at the Call Hall Dairy Bar. The Call Hall Dairy Bar offers all of your dairy favorites, from a variety of locally produced milk, cheese, and of course ice cream. Implementing a farm-to-spoon principle, all the products are made from milk produced by the University’s own herd of dairy cattle. One of the most popular flavors being “Purple Pride” a blueberry ice cream named in honor of the university.
5. End your day at the bar of Bluemont Hotel with this lavender hued drink. A blend of House Whiskey, Vodka, Tequila, Rum, Blue Curucao, Sour mix, Grenadine, the signature Bluemont Tea is a must try. This drink is packed with Purple Pride, and the peachy lemonade concoction will get you in the wildcat spirit!
