Life in the Little Apple
Flint Hills Discovery Center
20120405_CVB_133- Flint Hills Discovery Center (4).jpgThe Flint Hills Discovery Center is a dynamic tribute to the 10,000 square miles of tallgrass prairie and geographic Flint Hills that envelop Manhattan. Each exhibit area within the Discovery Center has an interactive component to enrich the learning experience for school children and adults all the same.

Your visit starts in the Immersive Experience Theater and the multimedia "Tallgrass Prairie: Tides of Time," descriptively enhanced through sights, sounds and innovative effects. You'll see, hear and feel the seemingly polar opposite powers of calm and fury within a controlled blaze. Nightly howls from packs of prairie coyotes will give the visitor instinctive chills in defense of the predatory prairie scavenger. The massive 60-foot, 120-degree concave screen in the Immersive Experience Theater brings the prairie experience to life in full-color brilliance, all within a three-story complex that contains more than 7,000 square feet of exhibit space.

The Discovery Center presents visitors with exploratory examples of how settlers and pioneers encountered shallow soils, and this forced farmers to convert those skills into new uses for the new land. Raising and grazing cattle became a staple of the environment and the local economy.

The striking beauty of the Flint Hills has a rich history waiting to be discovered. Guests can partake in the immersive experience, visit the gift shop and take a panoramic view of Downtown Manhattan and the majestic Kansas River and K-S Hill from the outdoor patios.
